An Exposure Scenario (ES) defines the authorised uses of a substance—either on its own or in mixtures—by specifying the operational conditions and the necessary risk management measures. These details must be included in the Extended Safety Data Sheets (eSDS) and communicated throughout the entire supply chain.

Downstream users must verify that their use of the substance is covered and compliant with the Exposure Scenario received, taking into account their own operational conditions (scaling).
This check is a key component of the chemical risk assessment and the evaluation of carcinogenic, mutagenic, or reprotoxic (CMR) risks, in accordance with Legislative Decree 81/2008.

Our Exposure Scenario Consultancy Service

We provide comprehensive support to companies to help them meet regulatory requirements through a set of specialised technical activities:

  • Verification of the accuracy of information contained in Safety Data Sheets (SDS)
  • Cross-check between actual company uses and those described in the SDS to ensure regulatory consistency
  • Assessment of operational practices in relation to exposure scenarios (scaling)
  • Technical support in communication with suppliers in case of mismatches between intended uses and available scenarios
  • Development of Exposure Scenarios for downstream users (DU-CSR, CSR-ES)
  • Compliance checks through on-site inspections, checklists, scaling models, and measurements in the workplace
  • Analysis of how prevention and protection measures from the ES align with chemical and CMR risk assessments (Section I and II, Title IX of Legislative Decree 81/08)
  • Definition of testing strategies for airborne substances, based on technical standards and integrated into risk assessments
  • Environmental and personal sampling to evaluate exposure, with analysis of resulting data
  • Review of chemical and CMR risk assessment documentation, incorporating compliance checks and sampling outcomes

Thanks to our structured and integrated approach, we help businesses strengthen regulatory compliance, improve risk management, and enhance communication across the supply chain.
