Public consultation on the REACH restriction intention for non polymeric aromatic brominated flame retardants
ECHA has launched a public consultation to assess impacts, alternatives and costs related to the proposed restriction on non polymeric aromatic brominated flame retardants (ABFR)
05 Feb 2026Following the mandate given by the European Commission to ECHA to prepare a restriction dossier on non‑polymeric Aromatic Brominated Flame Retardants (ABFR), which we had already discussed here, ECHA has launched a public consultation (call for evidence) to collect information on:
- stakeholders’ views on the restriction options currently under consideration;
- expected compliance costs and other economic impacts;
- information on alternatives, with particular focus on their technical and economic feasibility;
- additional impacts (employment, trade, manufacturing processes, product quality).
The consultation targets a broad range of stakeholders potentially involved in the use, formulation, or management of non‑polymeric ABFR, including private companies, industry associations, analytical laboratories, scientific organizations, NGOs and other interested parties, as well as Member State authorities holding relevant data. Given the global distribution of ABFR within supply chains, participation is encouraged from both EU/EEA and non‑EU operators.
The call for evidence, opened on 21 January 2026, will close on 18 March 2026.
